Births:
“How Great Thou Art”

(1) O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,

Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

CHORUS:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:

How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:

How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

(2) And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;

That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,

He bled and died to take away my sin:

(3) When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!

Then I shall bow in humble adoration,

And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

In tribute to a young minister by the name of Carl Boberg, who wrote these words in poem form after a two mile walk in the rain, following a church service nearly a hundred years ago, in the country of Sweden, where later he delighted, hearing it sung to an old Swedish tune – and to the Russian pastor, Stuart Hine, who like Boberg, caught in a storm some forty years later added to this magnificent hymn.

Once known as O Store Gud (O Great God) – How Great Thou Art is acclaimed by many, ‘an all-time favorite,’ rose to prominence in 1957 at a Billy Graham Crusade in New York City. Many, including Elvis, have recorded this hymn; however; it became one of the signature pieces of George Beverly Shea, endearing many hearts to the Lord’s service. Having read the words above, I pray the majesty of this anointed song will fill your heart with faith and the understanding; God uses ordinary men to go great things.
