The thought of man being fed ‘angels’ food’ is quite remarkable. You would certainly think that God would have raised up plants in the desert to take care of any hunger problem with the Children of Israel. However, that was not the case. God seemed to want the Children of Israel to get used to kingdom provision. The ‘corn of heaven’ was only a part of the heavenly provision they would enjoy over the next forty years.
When I think of ‘the corn of heaven’ I cannot help but think of the following story.
A few months ago, after preaching the Sunday morning message in a small East Texas church…I went to a home for lunch with some of my dear friends. Everyone in that family is a master cook, so you can imagine how the table was filled with all of those country delicacies. Even though the table was large, the extended family was even larger and more so with my family joining in.
It did not take long before everyone was more interested in eating than they were in conversing…or at least I was. I was sitting at the head of the table, lost in the moment, when suddenly I heard a voice coming from the other end of the table. The voice said, “How do you eat your corn, with your top teeth or your bottom teeth?” In unison everyone raised their heads and looked at the other end of the table to the one who asked this profound question. What we saw was my friend, David, sitting with both elbows on the table and his hands tightly gripping each end of an ear of corn. His mouth was rapidly moving from one end of the ear to the other…just like a typewriter. With eyes shut and juice squirting out each side of his mouth, he seemed to be lost in sweet corn ecstasy.
Needless to say, for the next few moments all of us tried to figure out how we ate our corn—as if it really mattered.
It has been some time since that glorious Sunday lunch. To this day I cannot eat corn on the cob in peace without thinking…do I grip it with my top teeth and eat it with my bottom teeth or do I grip it with my bottom teeth and eat it with my top teeth?
It really does not matter how we eat our corn as long as we know that our corn, as well as the rest of our provision, comes from God and is therefore heavenly provision. Sometimes there may be a temptation to take our heavenly provision for granted while focusing on the non essentials of life.
Father,
Thank You for our heavenly corn (provision). Lord, help us to never take our provision for granted as did the Children of Israel. Help us to always enjoy Your abundant blessings as we did at the family table on that memorable Sunday…while trying to figure out how we eat our corn.

And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full. (Psalms 78:24-25 KJV)
